About the Pennsylvania Innocence Project

Ioana worked with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project which works to exonerate those individuals who have been accused of crimes they did not commit. The U.S. Constitution guarantees a right against unlawful search and seizure (4th Amendment), and it helps prevent innocent people from being convicted and sentenced.

The Pennsylvania Innocent Project had four major goals (listed below):

  • Secure freedom and release from prison for innocent parties.
  • Provide clinical training to students going into the legal profession.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to address wrongful convictions.
  • To strengthen and improve the criminal justice system through public education and advocacy.

Ioana’s experience with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project has helped her to understand and have empathy for innocent people who have been arrested and charged with crimes that they did not commit and to see the justice system from the inside out to help improve it.

The criminal justice system is supposed to protect the innocent from criminal activities. Some of these criminal activities include trumped-up crimes that people did not commit, crimes where a person is falsely accused, or crimes that involve relying on anonymous or second-hand information to convict or search property illegally.

The idea of proper justice revolves around to follow the letter of the law involving warrants and search and seizure of personal assets or property. Real justice must always follow the Constitution of the United States. When the legal system or justice system diverts away from the Constitution, they sacrifice individual rights to freedom including free speech, the right to bear arms, and freedom from unlawful search and seizure (First Amendment, Second Amendment, and Fourth Amendments, respectively).
